The frozen bodies of two babies were found in a freezer on Thursday in the town of Bedoin, in the southern Vaucluse department, at the home of a woman who has since been held by the police, the public prosecutor in Carpentras, Hélène Mourges, told French news agency AFP.

“The case is in the beginning phase and the facts are of a criminal nature,” the magistrate said, explaining that the discovery took place in the morning, after “a third party” called the gendarmerie.

The woman arrested at the scene, a 41-year-old mother living in the town at the foot of Mont Ventoux, was taken into custody at 11 a.m.  It was not immediately possible to specify the age or sex of the babies found frozen, or their possible links with each other or with the suspect.

“It is difficult at this stage to give details,” Mourges insisted, adding that “samples have been taken” to find out more about the two children. “The autopsy will tell us more,” the prosecutor added.

The investigation has been entrusted to the Carpentras gendarmerie.

The link between the whistleblower who called the gendarmes and the woman in custody was not specified by the public prosecutor’s office.
