For those starting a Bachelor's or Master's degree in the next academic year in Belgium, registration fees will go up by 11%. Students in a 60-credit model pathway will pay €1092.1 next academic year, compared to €979.6 this academic year, reported De Morgen.

While discounts remain for students who win a scholarship or those on a reduced rate, they too will overall pay higher fees than before. Students entitled to a full scholarship will pay €128.8 next academic year, €13 more than this year. For reduced-rate students, a full 60-credit bachelor or master year will cost €576.1 going forward.

The increase of more than 11% is due to the Flemish Higher Education Codex which stipulates that tuition fees are the same for all universities and colleges of higher education and are indexed annually based on the health index in September.

Julien De Wit, President of the Flemish Association for Students (VVS), understands that universities and colleges are also feeling the effects of the crisis but wonders whether an increase of over 11% is realistic. He fears that higher education will no longer be affordable for many people, including the middle classes.
