The World Health Organization WHO is optimistic that the global emergency due to the corona pandemic can be lifted next year.
The hope is to be able to say next year, “This is no longer a pandemic,” WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday.
On the other hand, it is also plain as day that “the virus will remain.” However, vaccines, medication and behavioural regulations should be enough to contain the virus.
It is not up to the WHO to declare the end of a pandemic as the term “pandemic” is not in the organisation's toolbox. WHO can only lift the “public health emergency of international concern,” the WHO director explained.
The emergency was declared in late 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
