The exceptionally high electricity prices of the past two weeks are easing somewhat as temperatures soften and more wind is again forecast.

On the wholesale electricity market, the price of electricity on Monday in Belgium drops to €197 per megawatt hour – still very high compared to the past years, but well below prices seen in recent weeks when electricity sold at €400 to €500 per megawatt hour.

Those high prices were the result of a serious cold snap in Europe, little wind and sun and the fact that many nuclear plants in France weren't operating due to maintenance or technical issues.

With milder temperatures forecast and wind turbines to once again generate more electricity, that price spike seems to be behind us.
