On Wednesday, the Vatican confirmed that former Pope Benedict XVI’s health had worsened. At his general weekly audience, the current Pope Francis explained that his predecessor was “gravely ill” and that he was keeping him in his prayers.

In a statement, a press officer at the Holy See Matteo Bruni confirmed that the German former Pope was currently under medical supervision as "there has been an aggravation (of his health) due to his advanced age."

Bruni added that his situation is under control for the time being and that Benedict XVI "is being constantly monitored by doctors."

This comes after his successor, Pope Francis, stated during the Vatican's weekly public audience that Pope Benedict XVI was currently in ill health and that he was "praying for him."
