Belgium’s tax authorities received 2,558 notifications of possible fraud from citizens last year, the Federal Department of Finance said on Wednesday.

This was more than in 2021, when 2,338 such denunciations were made, but fewer than the record of 2,995, set in 2020.

The denunciations take the form of spontaneous notifications to the Finance Department, which then checks the veracity of the allegations. The number of such notifications is rather low compared to the 7.1 million tax returns filed by individuals.

The Finance Department is far from encouraging these practices and stresses that the tax authorities do not wait for such notifications to do their job.

Nor does the Department have a dedicated website, unlike Social Security, which has a “contact point for fair competition” allowing citizens, companies and organisations to report suspected social fraud at a single point.
