Witnesses reported hearing gunshots overnight from in the late hours of Thursday and early Friday morning in the Antwerp municipality of Hoboken.

Despite this, local police suspect that the bangs were most likely the result of a flammable device being thrown at a residence. Searches in the area have not turned up any evidence. A “banner” was found in the local area, which police say suggests that the incident was related to drug violence in the Flemish port city. Police say that they are now broadening their investigation.

Police are notably investigating whether the incident really pertains to a shooting. In addition to bomb squads, a forensic laboratory and Federal Judicial police were dispatched to the scene of the alleged crime. Police have also established a cordon while the investigation continues.
