Greta Thunberg has been arrested along with other climate activists during protests against the demolition of the German village of Lützerath for lignite mining, Reuters news agency reported, quoting local police.
The Swedish climate activist attended a protest at the Garzweiler 2 surface mine, about nine kilometres from Lützerath, sitting with a group of activists at the edge of the mine. She was led away by three policemen.
“Greta Thunberg was part of a group of activists walking to the edge. She was then stopped and taken away by us with the group from the immediate danger area to establish their identity,” an Aachen police spokesman told Reuters.
One activist jumped into the mine, the spokesman added.
Another police spokesman told the agency that it is not yet clear what Thunberg will face next. The climate activist last week joined demonstrators at the site protesting against the expansion of the mine. An eyewitness told Reuters she was alone in a large police van after she was arrested.
