Nearly 48,000 drivers were checked between 13 and 16 January during the 15th edition of ‘Weekend without alcohol behind the wheel’ and 1.62% were found to be in breach of the law, according to a statement from the federal police on Tuesday.

This was significantly lower than during the January 2022 edition, when 2.29% of drivers exceeded the authorised limit.

This time around, 162 motorists had their licences withdrawn for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The number of persons whose licenses were taken away for driving under the influence of drugs increased slightly, from 101 in January 2022 to 119 in January 2023.
