In a car park close to a nature reserve in the municipality of Zonhoven, in the province of Limburg, 50 barrels suspected to contain drug waste were found by hikers, who made the report to the police.

On Sunday morning around 08:00, hikers spotted about 50 blue and white barrels in a car park on the Donderslagseweg in Zonhoven, near the De Teut nature reserve, according to the Limburg Region Capital (LRH) police.

The barrels are believed to contain chemical product waste from a drug lab. Police have set up a safety perimeter at the car park.

"Hardly any of the product has leaked from the drums," LRH police spokesperson Dorien Baens told VRT, "so there is no danger for local residents." The judicial lab and the Cleanlab Response Unit are at the scene to investigate and consider how best to remove the barrels.
