Terrorist threat – the government plans to create a level 5 alert

The Justice Minister Koen Geens thinks that the current law, which lists 4 terrorist threat alert levels, should be revised. The creation of a fifth level is on the cards, De Tijd reported on Saturday.
Koen Geens has said that early discussions about an evaluation and a possible revision of the law are currently underway, in conjunction with the Home Affairs Minister Jan Jambon.

De Tijd has said that one of the possibilities is the creation of a fifth alert level. It would apply to a threat where there is specific information about the suspects, place or time. Currently, the highest is level 4, an imminent threat.

In an interview with the Tijd and Echo, André Vandoren, from Ocam, said this reform could be beneficial. “The current threats are not the same as when we were created in 2006, and the 2015 attacks in Paris on the Russian plane are on another level: they are acts of war”, he said.
