The European Union has approved a proposal to deploy a new fibre optic cable in Belgium's German-speaking Community, Belga New Agency has reported.
The Commission greenlit the 'Glasfaser Ostbelgien' scheme — a joint venture between Proximus and Ethias — after determining that it raised no competition-related difficulties.
The new cable will provide almost all of the 40,000 households in Belgium's German Community with ultrafast broadband access by 2026.
The project is estimated to cost €140 million, of which €40 million will be provided in grants from the German Community.
