The end of the Second World War was commemorated on Sunday. There were ceremonies at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the colonne du Congrès in Brussels. They marked the 71st anniversary of the day Nazi Germany surrendered.
General Van den Put, representing King Phillippe, attended a military commemoration, along with Defence Minister Steven Vandeput and the head of Defence General Gerard Van Caelenberge.
Foreign representatives also attended the ceremony. They laid wreaths of flowers, along with Belgian citizens and military personnel.
