The Turkish government is calling on property owners to provide housing for earthquake victims and on those without property to donate.

Owners of vacant or unused flats and houses can make their living space available for free or at a low rental price via a specially-created website, Vice President Fuat Oktay announced on state-run TRT television. The space must be made available for at least three months.

People who do not own property can donate to the victims and the money will be used to fund shelters, a statement explained.

Oktay said local authorities must determine whether the flats provided and the rental prices charged are adequate. When allocating flats, priority should be given to those in particular need, such as the elderly or those with disabilities or chronic illnesses.
