The jury of the eleventh European Urban and Regional Planning Awards honoured Brussels City Council by Jan Schollaert's construction work. He is a town planner at Brussels City Council and he has thrown himself into the pedestrian project for two years now. He has conducted this on behalf of Brussels' Burgomasters and Deputy Burgomasters. The jury declared the project one of the winners yesterday (Thursday).
Organised every two years by the European Council of Spatial Planners (ECTP-CEU) the European Urban and Regional Planning Awards. have taken place now for 22 years. They reward urbanisation and town and country planning projects, which contribute to improve quality of life, as much in rural as urban areas.
The Brussels City Council pedestrianisation features amongst the three winning projects. It has been honoured for its ambition of favouring pedestrian and cyclist use, in the beating heart of Brussels, by rebuilding the link between residential and tourists areas in Brussels.
This has occurred through the social and environmental restoration of this space, which it has done through making this public space more appropriate for the population's needs.
Brussels City Council is honoured to receive this award which “strengthens its desire to make sure the the city centre is there for Brussels inhabitants and to contribute to improving the surroundings.”
