Belgian cinemas have raised €60,000 for the Foundation against Cancer in the past month, after a total of 65 movie theatres pledged to donate €1 of each ticket sale to the fight against cancer.

Launched on World Cancer Day, the initiative was given the name "1 TICKET for life" and was headed by the Federation of Cinemas of Belgium (FCB), alongside the Belgian Association of Film Distributors and the Film Matters organisation.

In response to the initiative's success, the FCB's Secretary-General Thierry Laermans stated that "we are very proud of having been involved in this action."

He also went on to thank the Foundation against Cancer "without whom this would not have been possible," as well as "all participating cinemas and moviegoers."

The money will go towards cancer research and will seek to combat the affliction, which remains one of the leading causes of death in Belgium.
