Nuclear power stations will soon have their own quick-response team in the event of a terrorist attack.
This is reported in De Morgen and Het Laatste Nieuws today (Thursday).
The anti-terrorist unit concept should be ready to operate next year.
Belgium nuclear power stations have been monitored for several months by 140 soldiers.
As a means to replace them, the government has decided to develop a special unit, made up of specially trained federal police agents with specific training to intervene in the event of an attack.
The spokesman for the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control considers that, several specific security measures are currently in force for nuclear reactors. However, additional back-up is very welcome.
These power stations thus currently have unarmed private security, whereas new units will be equipped with semi-automatic weapons.
