The agreement reached at the UN on the first international treaty to protect the high seas is “a historic moment for our oceans,” EU Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius announced on Sunday, saying he was “very proud” of the outcome.

The agreement was reached at the UN on the first international treaty to protect the open oceans.

“We are taking a crucial step to preserve the marine life and biodiversity that are essential for us and for future generations,” the EU official said in a statement to AFP. “Today marks the culmination of more than a decade of preparatory work and international negotiations in which the EU has played a key role.”
