Christian Benteke kicked off the Red Devils' game on yesterday evening (Monday), during their “away” match in Faro (Portugal). It was played against Gibraltar. This meeting was the third game for the European qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The Crystal Palace attacker quickly crossed the opposing half of the pitch and then scored after Gibraltar had only, very briefly, had the ball after this match had kicked off.
With this 0-1 scored after seven and a few tenths seconds, the Red Devil created the quickest goal in history of World Cup qualifiers, per Gracenote statistics.
It is ahead of the eight-second goal of Davide Gualtieri, the Saint-Marin international, who scored a goal against England in November 1993.
In that case, the player, Gualtieri, caught out David Seaman, before England hit back in the match with an imposing 1-7 in a hard-fought match in Bologna, in Italy.
Unlike Betenke, Gualtieri had the ball at kick-off.
