A driver produced an exceptionally high breath test of 3 BAL (blood alcohol level) during a police check in Mechelen on Monday, reports VRT. During the police check the man fled, but was intercepted at his residence.

Local Rivierenland police carried out checks on alcohol and drugs in the area last weekend. "In the process, a driver on the R6 took an exceptionally high breath test," Rivierenland police said.

"The man had as much as 3 BAL alcohol in his blood." That amounts to around 15 pints of beer.

The driver was asked to wait at the police vehicle in order to take a breath test, but got back into his car and took off. "We were able to intercept him at his residence."

The man turned out not to have his driving licence in his pocket. "He will have to surrender his driving licence to the police for 15 days. In the meantime, we blocked his car with a steering bar."

The police took 1,647 breath tests last weekend in total. 35 drivers tested positive for being under the influence of substances, 33 for alcohol and two for drugs.
