The European Union should envisage a ban on the sale of petrol and diesel cars from 2030, the Swedish Environment Minister Isabella Lövin said on Saturday.
When interviewed by Aftonbladet, the Green Party Minister spoke about a recent law proposition regarding such a ban. This bill was adopted by the Bundesrat in Germany in September. It does not, however, commit Germany to anything.
“It is a really interesting proposition. If we want to get it in place, the only realistic option is to put in place an EU ban”, she told the paper.
“As Environment Minister, I see no other option than to make fossil fuels cars a thing of the past”, she said.
The Swedish government, which is a Social-democrat and Green alliance, wants the country to be powered using only renewable energy sources by 2040.
