A car caught on fire after a road accident on the E17 motorway between Ghent and Antwerp, Belga News Agency reports. The driver is said to be in critical condition, with two other motorists also seriously injured.
The motorist was driving in the Flemish municipality of Hasdook when they missed an exit and subsequently hit a safety rail. The car was then propelled several dozen metres forward before catching fire.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances behind the accident, with an expert appointed by the Public Prosecutor's Office currently on site.
Various reports have pointed towards excessive speeding being the cause of the accident, with a subsequent toxicological examination said to determine whether the motorist was driving under the influence. Due to breathing complications caused by the collision, the driver was first unable to do a breathalyser test.
