Belgium’s Council of Ministers have approved a proposal by Minister of the Civil Service Petra De Sutter which will mean that the federal public services will only buy or lease electric vehicles from July 2024, RTBF reports.
By 2030, most company cars in the federal administration will therefore circulate in a "sustainable" way, a statement from the minister's office read.
The obligation to switch to "zero-emission" company cars stems from a European directive, but the federal government intends to make an earlier start, changing its purchasing behaviour from summer 2024 rather than in January 2026, as stipulated by the EU.

The federal authority's fleet currently has 920 vehicles, not counting those of the police or defence department, according to the statement from Minister De Sutter's office. These are mainly service and inspection vehicles, as well as company cars for some staff members, although this is limited to managerial positions.
