Around 21:30 Monday evening, residents of Zonnegem called police after being startled by a loud noise. On Hazenakkerstraat in the province of Sint-Lievens-Houtem, a delivery van was set on fire after someone had smashed the windshield with a hammer and thrown a car bomb into it.
Nobody was injured but the van had completely burned down. The eyewitnesses noticed the culprit was still near the crime scene. The perpetrator was arrested across the street from the crime as he waited for the police to arrive.
The bomb had shattered windows in a nearby home as well as burned out the van. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
