The fasting of the month of Ramadan will begin on Saturday, May 27th at dawn, announced the Executive of the Muslims of Belgium (EMB) in a statement on Thursday. The decision was taken at the meeting of the Council of Theologians attached to the representative body of Islamic worship, the statement said.
The fasting will begin on the same date as in Saudi Arabia and France, where the decision was also taken on Thursday.
During the month of fasting, Muslims abstain from drinking, eating and sex from sunrise to sunset. However, exceptions exist for children who have not reached puberty, pregnant women, the sick and the elderly. The end of Ramadan is marked by the festival of Eid el-Fitr.
The EMB "wants this sacred month to be a month of piety, mutual aid and dialogue with all the components of Belgian society", says its president, Salah Echallaoui.
