Bulgarian, Mariya Gabriel, appointed European Commissioner for the Digital Economy

Mariya Gabriel, a Bulgarian of 38, is the new European Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society. With this appointment, the Commission once again counts 28 members, a few months after the departure of Gabriel's compatriot, Kristalina Georgieva, for the World Bank.

The appointment of Mariya Gabriel was a formality. After her successful hearing on June 20, 517 MPs decided to support her. Seventy-seven others voted against her, and 89 abstained in the secret ballot.

At the European Commission, Mariya Gabriel will be responsible for the implementation of the European Digital Single Market. The Bulgarian left the European Parliament, where she sat since 2009 among the Christian Democrats (EPP).
