Maximilien Park: Shelter for most vulnerable migrants

A solution is being found to provide shelter for the most vulnerable of the migrants who have occupied the Parc Maximilien in Brussels and around the Gare du Nord, Het Laatste Nieuws and De Morgen dailies reported. The Secretary of State for Migration, Theo Francken, confirmed that minors and pregnant women can be provided shelter through Samusocial, an agency that cares for homeless persons, according to Le Soir. The evening newspaper said Samusocial has signed an agreement to that effect with the Federal Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers, FEDASIL.

The two agencies are holding discussions to organize the reception of the migrants, but it is not yet known when it will be ready and how many places will be available.

Francken’s office expects to keep the project small. “We also do not expect many people to respond to this offer,” spokesperson Katrien Jansseune said. “Most refuse any type of reception because they want to travel on to Great Britain”.
