Human remains were found by workers on a construction site in the North of Brussels. The works have been halted and the Brussels public prosecutor has opened an investigation.

The human remains were found on the construction site of Place Rogier in the Brussels municipality of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode on Wednesday, the Brussels public prosecutor's office confirmed to The Brussels Times.

"The prosecution's office requisitioned a law doctor and the lab to study the bones. At first glance, these are thought to be very old human remains. The city departments of urbanism/archaeology were informed so that they can verify whether or not it is an archaeological site."

Workers on the construction site found human bones while at work, and immediately notified the emergency services.

An investigation has been opened into the discovery, however, as this has only just been launched, the office was not able to give more information. The construction site in question has been closed down until further notice.

Two people previously lost their lives on another construction site nearby, specifically the construction site of the former Sheraton. In early March 2022, a 36-year-old Portuguese worker fell from a 30-storey scaffold and died.

A few weeks later, sergeant-major Jean-François Spelmans of the Brussels fire brigade was killed in a fire on the site after an escalator collapsed on top of him during the fire-fighting operations. The man was freed from under the rubble by his colleagues but died on the spot.

The original article stated the remains were found on the construction site of the former Sheraton hotel near Place Rogier, but this has been corrected.
