Belgium has lost its gold medal for the heaviest tax burden in Europe, according to the latest figures from the European statistical office, Eurostat. The country’s tax burden – taxes plus social security contributions – amounted to 46.8% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is the third highest in the European Union (EU), behind France (47.6%) and Denmark (47.3%).
The EU countries that are easiest on taxpayers are Ireland (23.8%), Rumania (26%) and Bulgaria (29%).
