An imposing cycling sculpture was inaugurated on Monday at the foot of the Wall of Huy. The work, which illustrates the city’s cycling vocation, has been installed at the Place Saint-Denis 48 hours before the Flèche Wallonne road race is due to finish on Wednesday afternoon.
The sculpture, Pythalor Cursoriam Murus, is the work of Hainaut sculptor Michelangelo Circo, creator of large metal objects and structures.
Made of Corten steel, it is two metres high and four metres long. It weighs 2.5 tonnes and represents a bicycle, symbolising the route of the Mur de Huy (Wall of Huy), the three climbs of this mythical hill, and the three victories of Eddy Merckx in the Flèche Wallonne.
This monumental work enriches the artistic route initiated by the City of Huy in 2019, on the occasion of the Septennial Festivities, with the acquisition of the Corten steel sculptures by the artist Kalbut on the square in front of the collegiate church, and on the Batta lawn.
In March and July 2021, artist Matth Velvet created a fresco on a private facade in Rue des Augustins, as well as seven murals on a building in Rue Delloye-Matthieu.
In June 2022, the Liège artist of Colombian origin, Didier “Jaba” Matthieu, reproduced a Huy pictorial on two facades of the cultural centre.
