Out of 438,800 drivers who took breathalyser tests during the last BOB campaign, conducted this winter, only 9,219 or 2.1% had drunk too much. This percentage is the lowest since the launch of the annual campaign against drunk driving, which includes general information, awareness-raising and increased police surveillance, the Belgian road safety institute, VIAS, and the police stressed on Thursday.
In the winter of 2016-2017, some 2.3% of drivers tested had excessively high blood alcohol levels. The worst result was in the winter of 2003-2004, when 9.9% of drivers failed the alcohol test.
The only bad news from this winter’s campaign is that almost 6% of drivers tested on weeknights exceeded the allowed blood alcohol limit.
Alcohol is a factor in one out of every nine accidents, VIAS and the police recalled.
