The Carrefour hypermarkets in Westerlo and Angleur (in the Belle-Île shopping centre) will not open on Friday, owing to industrial action as a result of the restructuring plan announced by the management over the past week. The Angleur hypermarket is threatened with closure, as is the one in Genk. The hypermarket in Westerlo is likely to see its surface area reduced, so as to become simply a supermarket, with an expected consequential reduction in key staff. Baptiste Van Outryve, the spokesman for Carrefour, said, “We wish to limit the impact for everyone insofar as possible.”
The group’s other hypermarkets are open today as normal. There are other staff meetings anticipated in the various hypermarkets. Carrefour is keeping all of its customers updated, as to other potential strikes, on its website.
