Of all of the harassment complaints that go as far as the prosecutor’s office, more than half (52%) are closed without follow-up, according to new figures reported Wednesday by the Mediahuis press. In 2016, 17,952 complaints of this kind were filed, of which 9,119 were dismissed by the courts without a follow-up. “With good reasons sometimes, but sometimes also for incomprehensible reasons”, protests senator Nele Lijnen of the Open Vld . “For 60 complaints, it was estimated that there wasn’t sufficient staff available. In 223 cases, it was said that there were other priorities. Equally concerning: in 725 cases, one did not want to intervene because the case was within the private sphere.”
