Two cyclists pulled a man out of the water of the canal at around 22:30 on Saturday evening at the Quai du Hainaut in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, opposite the Belvue hotel, the Brussels fire brigade reports.

The victim was brought back to the bank with the help of emergency services who swiftly arrived on the scene. The man was taken to hospital but was not in a critical condition.

“A man ended up in the canal at the Belvue hotel in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, in circumstances that are not yet known,” Walter Derieuw, spokesman for the Brussels fire brigade, said on Sunday.

“Two cyclists who were passing by heard him shouting for help. They stopped and climbed down to the bank via a ladder along the wall. They helped him out of the water and we assisted them, as soon as we arrived on the scene, to bring the victim up to street level."

“The victim was conscious. He was taken to hospital, but her prognosis was not life-threatening,” the spokesman said.
