Train traffic in and around Brussels has been disrupted since 06:00 on Wednesday morning due to damage to the overhead line at Brussels North.

The damage was detected to the overhead line on platform 3 in Brussels North Station. The cause is not entirely clear yet but Infrabel technicians are on-site to investigate this and carry out the necessary repairs, the rail network manager's spokesperson said.

"As a result of this damage, the morning rush hour has been severely disrupted," the spokesperson told The Brussels Times.

"A lot of trains pass through the capital's North Station, so the damage on the overhead line has also affected other trains, resulting in a delay of about 10 to 15 minutes per train."

Impact on train traffic

At some point on Wednesday morning, three trains were at a complete standstill. One train was stuck in Kortenberg station, just outside the capital, which will be towed by a diesel locomotive.

The passengers were transferred to another train. Another two trains with a total of around 30 passengers on board also came to a standstill. All passengers have been evacuated.

Two direct connections have been stopped, between Brussels and Antwerp and Nivelles and Landen. "This does not mean that all trains between these stations are not running, but a series of trains have been cancelled and other trains have been locally diverted at Brussels North."

The biggest issues are currently being experienced on the axis Brussels-Leuven-Liège, while ICE high-speed trains are not running between Brussels and Liège, for the time being.

"Infrabel specialists are still on-site to repair the damage as soon as possible," the spokesperson stressed.

Travellers have been asked to check the SNCB website or app for more information on delays.
