All construction site workers have now undergone compulsory basic safety training, the construction sector's federation Embuild announced on Wednesday.

Moreover, anyone starting in the sector – whether employed or freelance – must now undergo eight hours of training within their first month of work.

Having already been made compulsory in April 2022 for a specific group of construction workers, the measure has now been extended to all those wishing to work on a construction site.

Embuild CEO Niko Demeester stated that mandatory training would help the sector "do even better" in terms of reducing the number of work-related accidents "which have already fallen by 14% over the past five years."

Particular attention will be paid to self-employed workers who are now responsible for complying with this training obligation, both for themselves and for any of their staff. They risk various sanctions if they fail to comply.

Moreover, in cases of subcontracted work, the main contractor will be held liable if there are any infringements further down the work chain regarding the security training.
