The last two Sudanese nationals detained in closed centers who had been screened by officials from Khartoum were expelled Wednesday night. "They were deported, one via Istanbul, the other via Cairo, and the flights went off without incident," said Theo Francken, secretary of state for asylum and immigration.
The deportation of Sudanese refugees was controversial after allegations of torture on their return to Sudan. Some repatriations were suspended pending an improvement in the procedures.
Other Sudanese nationals were released by court order since their removal orders did not provide sufficient guarantees that they would not suffer any inhuman and degrading treatment in Sudan.
