Rail traffic resumed on Saturday morning between Mechelen and Dendermonde after a collision on Friday evening at Buggenhout, rail infrastructure manager Infrabel said.

The accident occurred shortly before 22:00 at night near Buggenhout station between a train and a car. The car was partly on the tracks after an earlier collision.

The driver of a train made an emergency stop but was unable to avoid a collision with the vehicle. The car was empty at the time of the collision on the tracks and there were no injuries. Railway staff and emergency services were at the scene on Friday night, Infrabel reported.

The repair services finished their work at around 01:00 and trains were running normally on Saturday morning.
