Fourteen Greenpeace activists arrested on Saturday following their action at Fluxys’ gas terminal in the port of Zeebrugge have been referred to the correctional court, the Bruges public prosecutor’s office said on Monday.

They had been among a score of environmental activists who had occupied the docks used by the LNG tankers and unfurled a large banner with the words: “Gas kills, Fluxys guilty.”

The Earth advocacy organisation wanted to call for the abandoning of all new gas infrastructure and a European plan to phase out gas, the burning of which contributes to global warming, by 2035.

At the end of the action, 14 activists were arrested by the police. They will have to appear next month before the criminal court for intrusion into the port.

Greenpeace said on Monday it was relieved that its activists had been released, but described their referral to the criminal court as “pure intimidation,” and called on public opinion for solidarity.
