Brussels North is Belgium’s busiest train station

With an average of more than 61,000 passengers a day, Brussels North station is the busiest in the country, according to figures from the national rail authority SNCB/NMBS. Thanks to the number of commuters who travel from outside Brussels to come to work, the second and third places on the list fall to Brussels Central with 59,258, and Brussels South with 58,461.

The top five is completed by Ghent Sint-Pieters on 56,314, followed by Antwerp Central with 34,998. Wallonia comes into play at number seven with Ottignies, an important hub station with 22,567 passengers, still far behind Leuven on 34,267. Completing the top ten are Mechelen (20,886) Namur (20,156) and Bruges (18,506)

The SNCB, however, issued the figures with a proviso: the numbers are counted during a short period, usually in October, and rely on visual counting: some stations like Ottignies and Mechelen can serve as connections rather than destinations, which might mean passengers are being counted twice, for example at Mechelen and Antwerp. The authority says it is looking into a more accurate way of measuring passenger numbers digitally.
