A fire broke out in an apartment building in the Brussels municipality of Etterbeek on Sunday evening.

There were no injuries but the building is now uninhabitable, the Brussels Fire Brigade has reported.

Reports of the fire in the building in Cours Saint Michel (Sint Michielswarande) began at around 20:25 on Sunday evening.

When firefighters arrived, the fire was blazing in the attic of the four-storey building. The building's residents had already managed to get out to safety.

"We were able to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings, but the flat where the fire started did eventually burn out," said Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the Brussels Fire Brigade.

The firefighters had to partially dismantle the roof and roof insulation to "cool down all the hot spots and avoid another flare-up."

As such, the clean-up work took the fire brigade a long time. In order to avoid further damage caused by the weather, the openings made in the roof were covered with tarpaulin.

The building is uninhabitable, due to the water damage on the third floor and in the common areas.

Sibelga, which manages the electricity and natural gas distribution networks for the 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region, has also secured the electrical installation, another spokesperson stated.

"It is the residents' responsibility to find new accommodation," the spokesperson continued. "The cause of the fire was accidental."
