Authorities in the City of Brussels municipality are set to distribute up to 180,000 free parking vouchers to drivers over the coming weeks.
The measure, which was announced by the City of Brussels Councillor of Economic Affairs Fabian Maingain (DéFI) on Tuesday to Belgian media, is intended to encourage motorists to use the 18 car parks located inside the Brussels Pentagon, or historic city centre.
"Car parks today represent the most comfortable, fast and safe gateway to the city centre and its shopping districts," Maingain said in a statement.
On Twitter, the 37-year-old added that the initiative would "support the economy and the change in mobility [patterns]" in and around Belgium's capital city.
The tickets, which will each be valid for one hour, will be distributed and accepted at the following car parks from June: Royal, Albertine, Poelaert, Grand Place, Écuyer, Monnaie, De Brouckère, Alhambra, City 2, Passage 44, Botanique, Rogier, Brucity, Deux portes, Dansaert, Lepage, Pacheco and Centre.
