First World War ammunition dump discovered in Zonnebeke

About 80 shells and other explosive devices dating back to the First World War were discovered on Wednesday in Zonnebeke, West Flanders.

Five area residents had to be temporarily evacuated.

The dump was uncovered by firefighters at around 1 p.m., after they were called in to respond to smoke from a phosgene bomb.

The device was cleared by the Defence Department’s bomb disposal service, but some 80 other explosives were found.

Two dwellings near the site were emptied of their five occupants during the operation, which ended at around 5 p.m.
