US approves sale of surface-to-air missiles to Ukraine

Washington on Wednesday announced the sale of advanced NASAMS surface-to-air missile systems to Ukraine for some $285 million.

“Ukraine urgently needs to bolster its defence capabilities against Russian missile strikes and aviation,” the US Defense Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said in a statement.

The State Department approved the sale and the US Congress has been notified, although it had yet to give the green light.

Air defence has proven to be a crucial factor in the conflict in the face of Russian missile barrages.

The United States has provided Ukraine with billions of dollars in US military aid since the start of Russia’s offensive on 24 February 2022.
