The Flemish Christian democratic CD&V is submitting a new proposal that would make it possible for recreational areas across the country to deny access to people. This was already tried last year, but the legal basis for it did not prove strong enough.

To avoid issues with young people making trouble in recreational areas like the past years, the province of East Flanders is requiring visitors to show their identity card from 1 June; those who misbehave will be denied access throughout the province.

However, as nothing prevents the troublemakers from looking for somewhere else to go, CD&V came up with a proposal for a nationwide entry ban last year. After legal opinions, however, that proved too weak.

"We were advised to base ourselves on existing legislation," said Federal MP for CD&V Franky Demon. "Therefore, we took the football law as our starting point this time."

That football law also included the possibility of a national stadium ban – something that will also be copied to recreational areas. Additionally, there will also be differentiated punishments: someone who climbs over the fence will receive a lighter punishment than someone who assaults a steward, for example.

CD&V hopes to put the bill on the table in the Chamber next month.
