Two guards at Haren prison were attacked by an inmate during visiting hours on Saturday afternoon, leading the prison's employees to file a strike notice for 7 June.

“The inmate attacked a guard without cause,” Kathleen Van De Vijver, spokesperson for the prison system said. “The local intervention service intervened. In the process, one of them was injured on the hand. Those involved were taken to hospital for treatment.”

The detainee who attacked the jailers has a mental disorder, La Dernière Heure reports. The newspaper also writes that the guards were displeased that the visits continued as usual despite the serious incident.
