Spartak Moscow striker Quincy Promes, already on trial in the Netherlands for stabbing a cousin, is now also on trial for importing cocaine, the Dutch public prosecutor’s office announced on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old Dutch international is accused, alongside another 31-year-old Dutchman, of importing “several hundred kilos” of cocaine in January 2020,  including through the port of Antwerp in Belgium, the public prosecutor’s office told French news agency AFP.

The former Ajax player was already suspected of involvement in drug trafficking and participation in a criminal organisation.

The preliminary hearing will be held on Monday, according to local media. The player will not attend due to contractual obligations with his club, Dutch news agency ANP reported.

In a separate case, the Dutch public prosecutor’s office had requested two years in prison in March against Promes for allegedly stabbing a cousin during a quarrel in July 2020.

The footballer was initially prosecuted for attempted homicide but, based on the statements of several witnesses, the prosecution concluded that there was no evidence to establish that his aim was to kill the victim.

The Amsterdam-born Dutch international was playing for Ajax at the time of the events. He returned in early 2021 to Spartak Moscow, where he had previously played four seasons - from 2014 to 2018.

Promes played as a substitute for the Dutch national team in the Euro in June 2021, but has not been selected since.
