Piet Buyse (CD&V) will step down as mayor of Dendermonde, East Flanders, at the beginning of 2024, his party announced in a press release on Tuesday evening.
Mr. Buyse will hand over on 1 January to First Alderman Leen Dierick, and will not take part in the next municipal elections.
He has held the post of mayor for 17 years. Nele Cleemput and Dieter Mannaert will succeed Leen Dierick as aldermen.
