A 73-year-old Belgian cyclist suffered a fatal fall in a race held in Luxembourg on Saturday.
The fall occurred shortly after 12:00, 25 kilometres before the finish line of the Schleck Gran Fondo, a cycle race for tourists at the initiative of former professional cyclist Fränk Schleck. It includes a time trial and classification.
The organisers confirmed the fatal accident in a message posted on Facebook. “It is with great sadness and emotion that we inform you that a serious accident has occurred during the 2023 edition of the Schleck Gran Fondo. Unfortunately, one of our participants died during the event.”
The cyclist suffered a heavy fall and despite emergency services arriving quickly on the scene, the Belgian cyclist succumbed to his injuries.
