As part of Art Nouveau Brussels 2023, the King Baudouin Foundation has curated several works of art from the movement in an exhibition at the BELvue Museum in Brussels.

The King Baudouin Foundation has been able to collect several major pieces from the Art Nouveau movement over the past 20 years which will be on display from 7 June 2023 to 7 January 2024.

The collection of unique pieces includes artists' jewellery, furniture, sculptures, ceramics and drawings, thanks to the generosity of art lovers. The pieces were created by Henry van de Velde, Victor Horta, George Morren and Gustave Serrurier-Bovy.

"Usually the artworks are scattered among various public institutions in Belgium, but we are bringing them together in the BELvue museum," said curator of the King Baudouin Foundation's collections Julie Lenaerts. "This is very exceptional. We have selected about 40 pieces, often striking models but also everyday utensils typical of that style."

In the first room, one can admire a magnificent ring by Henry van de Velde or the pendant 'Dragonfly' by Philippe Wolfers. A little further on, at the beginning of the corridor covered with advertising posters, tiles and sculptures, is a dining room and desk set designed by Victor Horta.

Novelist and historian Marc Meganck will share narratives along the way that will take visitors on a journey through time as they marvel at the exhibition.

The selected works are part of the Art Nouveau movement – a style that was particularly popular in Brussels between 1893 and 1910. "This artistic movement emphasises creativity, craftsmanship and nature. Combining beauty with technical progress, it is expressed both in architecture and decorative arts (furniture, jewellery, decorative objects)," Werner Adriaenssens, curator of the event, explained.

The King Baudouin Foundation's Art Nouveau exhibition at the BELvue Museum is free to visit and runs until 7 January 2024.
